Check in
points for everyone attending the conference are the two higher education
institutions in the city, the Central University of Technology (CUT) and UFS.
Journalists, international guests, as well as the delegates will all queue up at
either of the institutions queuing up to get their accreditation before the
cut-off date. Those driving past
or entering the UFS via the main entrancein Nelson Mandela drive) are greeted
by ANC flags wedged onto lampposts along the main road as well as a welcoming
message at the main gate.
Broadcast
vans from 567 Cape Talk and sister station 702, Jacaranda and a couple of other
SABC stations are in evidence.

The atmosphere on the campus is electric with people moving like an ant
colony to make sure their names are in the big books. No one wants to miss the
action!
Amidst all the excitement there were some hurdles, as expected with any
big event. There was mismanagement of the registering venues, the officials
arrived too late at the venues and did not start in time.

This morning, I went to the
ANC’s media briefing session where
ANC leader, Jackson Mthembu, Gwede Mantashe and Jeff Radebe gave us an overview
of what to expect from the conference. They said the Constitutional Court
ruling against the Free State Provincial Executive Committee will have little
effect on the proceedings. Only one thing is standing in the way of my
excitement and anticipation – registration. Not only are the lines incredibly long, but the
communication from the organisers has been a major hurdle.
A day and half to go...
